Melt-Proof Workwear Summer Styles to Beat the Heat

Figuring out how to style a polished, summer work outfit when it’s sweltering hot outside can be a difficult task for anyone. Navigating workwear summer style means finding the perfect balance between comfort and professionalism. First, there’s the stress around traveling to the office: perhaps you’re biking or walking during your workday commute, or you frequently have lunch outdoors in the sunshine.
Then, there’s the change of environment from outdoor heat to indoor air conditioners with a little too much power, leaving you going from sun-baked to flash-frozen. And of course, there’s almost always an office dress code—as out of date as it may be—to consider, as well! How can one possibly dress for all of these different moments throughout the summer months?
While you want to make sure that you’re maintaining the dress code, you also want to stay comfortable throughout the work day (and try not to freeze in the office air conditioning or melt on the commute home).
We polled our team of stylists and asked them to provide their top tips for summer office outfits in addition to spilling a few secrets we share with our clients about beating the heat while staying office-appropriate. Today, our style team is here to give you some tips and tricks on how to navigate the tricky, sweaty situation that is summer office wear. Let’s dive in!

1. Loosen up
A good pair of ankle-length trousers or a flouncy full-sleeved blouse isn’t off-limits when it’s 90 degrees out! Just make sure they’re summer-proof by choosing looser silhouettes, flexible fits, and breathable fabrics like cotton, lyocell, and linen. Brands like Banana Republic, Gap, and Eileen Fisher all have breathable linen and cotton pieces that can be worn year-round. For more colorful options, look to Farm Rio, J. Crew, and Mango for tropical prints that won’t leave you sweltering in the heat.
Curious about how to rock loose-fitting styles with a shorter silhouette? Take your pieces to a local tailor or alterations specialist, and work with them to hem or adjust your pieces to the right length for your body type.
For a more feminine look, belt up a white maxi or midi dress to look instantly chic and put together. Wearing white will attract the least amount of heat from the sun, and you can choose light, airy fabrics such as linen or cotton for a breathable feel. This is also the perfect time of year for a cream (or colorful) silk skirt. Pair it with a neutral shell (more on that later), your favorite blouse, and a lightweight blazer scrunched at the sleeves.
If you’re looking for a more masculine option, try linen trousers or lightweight chinos in a looser fit! A blazer is also always an option here, but don’t forget about light, structured jackets that can keep you cool but provide a sharpening line for your silhouette. Details such as vents and pleats are also important to look for, as they provide crisp lines and a bit more breathability in your clothing.

2. Layer up!
While this might seem counterintuitive, having office-appropriate layers on hand (like a trench coat or blazer) will keep you prepared for both inside and outside temperatures (aka that freezing or melting situation mentioned earlier). Other lightweight fabric layering options include a light cardigan, shawl or scarf, and a wrap. Perfect fabrics for these include cashmere, merino wool, or cotton, depending on how warm or cool you’d like to remain. Make sure to select items that are easy to transition into (and out of) as well: avoid items that have excessive buttons, zippers, or any accessory that isn’t easy to adjust throughout the changing temperatures of the day.
It’s a good idea to upgrade your basics for this look. Layering up a silk cami (for a more feminine look) or a high-quality white shirt (for a more masculine look) will make you look effortlessly polished, while also ensuring you’re not sweating buckets at the office. Choose neutral colors for these shell layers so you can easily mix and match them with different office outfits—bonus points if you find a few in each color! These are great basics to stock up on during seasonal sales at your favorite online or brick-and-mortar stores.

3. Go monochrome
If a power suit is mandatory, try to choose a monochrome, lightweight option for a low-effort, but elevated look. Look for fabrics such as cotton, linen, or chambray that will provide maximum stretch and breathability. For summer, go for white or light neutral colors to keep the sun off your back. You’ll also be able to mix and match these top and bottom pieces of your suit with other items in your summer work wardrobe, assuming they’re a comparable color in your preferred palette.
For example, mix a cream linen blazer with a fuchsia midi skirt and pair the cream linen pants with a light blue chambray shirt for multiple outfit combinations. Again, look for items with vents or pleats so you can maximize the airflow throughout your garment. You’ll be surprised at what a difference it makes.

More Tips to Build Your Summer Workwear Arsenal
Still feeling a little stuck on what pieces to actually reach for when it’s time to get dressed? Don’t worry—we’ve got more ideas. Below, we’re rounding up our favorite warm-weather essentials that are both breathable and boardroom-ready. Think midi dresses, shirtdresses, linen trousers, button-ups, and matching sets that are as comfortable as they are polished.
The Power of a Tailored Pant
Instead of tight, restrictive styles, go for wide-leg or relaxed trouser silhouettes in linen or lightweight poplin. These breezy fabrics allow airflow and movement, making your commute and office hours far more bearable.
Style tip: Pair your trousers with a vest or button-up for a polished but breathable outfit. Add a pair of ballet flats or a low heel to finish the look – stylish and comfortable.
Belt It and Go
A simple belt can transform even the most relaxed summer outfit into something work-appropriate. Try adding a belt to a midi dress or a maxi skirt to create shape and structure. Look for poplin or cotton versions in striped or solid neutrals for that effortless summer workwear vibe.
We also love belting a tee and a midi skirt combo to streamline your silhouette. Add an open white blazer on top for chilly meeting rooms, and finish with sleek loafers or a fun sandal.
Are midi dresses okay to wear to work?
Yes! A midi dress in linen, poplin, or cotton is one of our favorite summer pieces. Style with a belt, sandals, or even a loafer for a polished silhouette you can wear all day.
Matching Sets, But Make It Office-Ready
The matching set is one of the best summer workwear hacks. Whether it’s a structured matching suit vest with coordinating trousers, or a relaxed button-up and short duo (for creative offices), these looks are easy to mix and match.
Go for a striped set for a pop of personality, or stick with monochrome tones for that clean, effortless look. Add a blazer or lightweight cardigan to carry the look from the outdoor heat to indoor chill.
Pop of Color: How to Brighten Up Office Looks
Neutrals are great, but don’t be afraid to add a pop of color! A bright blouse, bold sandals, or even a denim jacket in a playful hue can elevate your basics. Try a striped button-up tucked into your trousers, or a brightly-colored heel with your matching set to give your outfit a summery feel without compromising professionalism.
A vest in a fun shade or a color-blocked shirtdress also adds dimension to your wardrobe. The key? Keep the rest of your look simple to let that one piece shine.
Don’t Underestimate Shoes
Shoes matter more than ever in the summer. You want something breathable, stylish, and supportive—without sacrificing comfort. A structured flat or classic loafer works well in most office settings, and ballet flats offer a chic, feminine touch. For something dressier, try a stacked heel or minimal sandal in leather or suede.
Keep a neutral pair under your desk and rotate in striped, metallic, or color-pop options to keep your summer workwear looking fresh and personal.
What shoes work best for a long day at the office?
Stick with comfy-yet-polished picks like a slingback, loafer, or ballet flat—they’ll go with your workwear rotation and the rest of the outfit, even after hours.
The Shirtdress Shortcut
If you’re looking for a one-and-done outfit, a shirtdress is your best summer investment. Look for styles in crisp cotton or poplin, with a waist tie or room for a belt. Pair it with sandal heels for meetings or flats for a casual Friday vibe. Add a blazer or cardigan for layering, and you’ve got a complete look that transitions effortlessly from day to night.
You can even wear a shirtdress open over wide-leg denim or trousers as a long layer—super chic, super effortless.
