Our Curator, Ariel, has vivid memories from growing up in the 90s of the way her mom dressed for work each day. “Skirt suits, pantyhose, and those little round toe heels—you know the ones.” Looking back, it’s fascinating to see how styles evolve, especially when considering how these pieces might translate—or not—into a modern retirement wardrobe that values comfort and versatility over rigid office attire.

Of course, over time, her mother’s style evolved with conventional workplace trends: the daily look included a colorful but conservative blouse, slacks, and flats. Ariel recalls, “It was a simple outfit formula, but she always made it her own, and I’ve always admired her style. Then…she retired and moved to Florida. “

Perhaps you already know where we’re going with this story! “After weeks of nonstop beachwear, she called me and lamented, ‘I have no idea how to dress here.'”

Retirement signifies the start of a distinctive chapter in your life. If you’ve been through this experience—or will be going through it soon—please know our entire style team understands the emotions and changes you’re experiencing. And while we can’t solve all of them, we can certainly help guide you into finding a style that works for you wherever you end up.

Let’s explore the exciting prospects of building a retirement wardrobe through the collaborative efforts of our style team.

Chapter 1: Reflecting on Your Style Evolution

First, look back on your style. How did you dress in your 20s, 30s, and 40s? If helpful, pull out old photographs and try to remember how you felt in each of those decades. What were your priorities when getting dressed then?

Next, think about what you didn’t get to experience that perhaps you’d like to try in this next era. Would you like to experiment more with color, texture, or shape? Write down a few of the words that resonate with you.

Chapter 2: Harmonizing Your Comfort and Personal Style

When we work with retired clients, our style team takes extra care to understand their new lifestyles. They may have dressed a certain way in an office setting but our goal here is to find out what they’re doing in this new environment and learn how we can create the most effective styles for it.

For those who’ve joined several social groups, we’ll build a wardrobe around looks for events. And when comfort is more of a priority, we’ll style clients in outfits that are able to multitask for errands or family activities.

The best part of today’s fashion landscape is that there are more fabrics than ever before. Love blazers but want something softer? Items such as knitted blazers bring a new level of comfort and style to your wardrobe.

What clothes look best on a woman in her 60s entering retirement?

Style in your 60s is about merging sophistication with authenticity. Instead of chasing fleeting trends, lean into “Timeless Trends”—think structured wrap dresses, wide-leg trousers for elegance, and high-quality dark-wash denim. Personalize these basics with bold accessories or a pop of color to ensure your look feels vibrant and “you.”

Chapter 3: Wardrobe Revitalization

Now comes the work of combing through your closet. Luckily, our style team handles this for you! When we work with Closet Clarity package clients, we bring the (wo)manpower to sort, organize, store, and remove unwanted items from your wardrobe. It’s a particularly cathartic experience for clients ready to shed their professional style for something more authentic to themselves.

If you’re tackling this project solo, we recommend setting aside a day or two so you can carefully sort through pieces. Have a few trash bags and clear lidded containers ready to set up your closet for success.

Chapter 4: Experimenting with Trends

As a style team, we thrive when each member can contribute to a client’s success story. When a client is looking to take on the trends in a post-retirement life, our Curator steps in to select accessories, bold patterns, and contemporary cuts that align with each client’s personality.

If this sounds like something you’re interested in trying with our style team, let us know! We’ll ensure a harmonious integration of trends that resonate with your preferences and everyday style.

Why should I work with a style team to build my retirement wardrobe?

Transitioning your style solo can be overwhelming. Our style team provides “manpower” for a cathartic closet cleansing and helps fill the gaps with intentional, high-quality purchases. We ensure a harmonious integration of trends that align with your new daily routine—whether that’s traveling, social events, or enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle.
