style tips Feb 22, 2022

The fashion industry loves your hourglass body shape. And so should you! Your natural curves resonate with femininity, style, and elegance and allow you to have a diverse and fascinating wardrobe. Sure, no body type is perfect, and you'll probably instantaneously show us a long list with everything you'd change about your body, but take a moment to think about it. How many other women can say they have the same silhouette as Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and Jayne Mansfield? We bet that list doesn't look very long, does it? Your hourglass figure is an asset, and if you learn to dress it properly, you'll walk and feel like a diva every day.

How do you know if you have an hourglass body shape?

Identifying an hourglass body shape is easy. You just need to measure your hips and bust, and if they are nearly equal, you're the proud owner of a splendid hourglass-shaped body. If you have an hourglass silhouette.

You have a lovely hourglass body shape if:

  • Your shoulder and hip measurements are nearly equal
  • Your shoulders are slightly round
  • You have a well-defined and narrow waist
  • Your bust and bottom are generous

In other words, your body looks just like an hourglass. Furthermore, you often describe yourself as curvy and might complain at times about your bigger thighs and voluptuous derrière. But check the body dissatisfaction at the door because just like all the body shapes, this one is beautiful. If you choose the right clothes for your hourglass shape and rely on a functional wardrobe meant to highlight your assets and hide the tiny imperfections you think you have, you'll see that you wouldn't want any other body shape.

How to style your hourglass figure?

Your natural silhouette has the advantage of already being balanced. While women with other body types may need to work towards finding balance through their clothing, you are already there. All you need to do is just follow your natural shape.

Start by proportionally dressing the top and bottom of your body and focus more on your natural waist. Waist definition is key when dressing hourglass female figures. Don't unbalance your natural body shape by adding extra volume where it isn't necessary. You don't want to attract attention to your lower or upper body, attractive as they are. You need all eyes on your defined waist.

How to follow the lines of your natural figure

  • Choose clothes that highlight your natural curves
  • Opt for a simple style that flaunts your silhouette lines
  • Have a reliable collection of high-quality bras
  • Accentuate your waist with belts or nipped garments
  • Highlight your narrow waist with darker colors

What to avoid for a balanced figure

  • Avoid unnecessary volume in both your lower and upper body
  • Do not invest in clothes that clutter up your figure
  • Stay away from loose garments and boxy styles
  • Avoid clothes or accessories that draw attention to the hips and shoulders
  • Keep it simple but don't wear shapeless or baggy styles

What to wear if you have an hourglass body?

Whenever we are putting together an hourglass wardrobe, our style goals are to highlight the client's incredible curves and draw attention to her favorite parts of her figure. We always try to remind our clients that the female body shape is not a matter of body weight and will not change depending on weight loss or weight gain. Bone structure rules supreme in this case and we need to learn how to make the best of what nature has given us.

The key with wardrobe is to find garments that add balance. For hourglass figures, we recommend outfits that balance the shoulders, bust, waist, and hips, and patterns and bright colors to emphasize the waistline. Take a look at some of the outfit goals you should have if you want to make the most of your hourglass figure and improve your personal style:

Tops

When it comes to tops, we like to keep it simple. Basically, there is only one rule we want you to remember: let it be fitted! Fitted tops have been designed for hourglass shapes and are an ode fashion designers often dedicate to your type of body. Choose tops that celebrate your natural waist and highlight your neckline. Include wrap tops, form-fitting jersey knits, and peplum blouses in your wardrobe, and never refuse a V-neck, round neck, or boat neck. The same rule applies to your sleeves! Keep them fitted and let someone else experiment with wide sleeves. If you don't want to add extra volume to your breast area, avoid turtlenecks and high necklines.

Jeans

We often find jeans to be one of the most problematic aspects of a woman's wardrobe. Jeans should be chosen according to your body shape and not trends. The TikTok generation has informed us that low-rise jeans are making a comeback, but they haven't lived through the 90s to see the horrors we endured to fit into those jeans that, honestly, were rarely a good look on anyone. So, unless you're Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera, we suggest choosing high-waist jeans that accentuate your waist and flatter your amazing curves. Flared jeans also are a wise choice because they balance your voluptuous hips and thighs, as are wide-leg jeans that lend proportion to your lower half.

Dresses

We are now stepping into the land of infinite possibilities! Dresses are a match made in fashion heaven with an hourglass figure, and we couldn't recommend them enough. Opt for dresses that draw attention to your waist and keep the volume added to your bust to a minimum. Wrap dresses are always a phenomenal idea, but you should also consider all types of nipped and belted dresses. It is best to steer clear from dresses that follow straight lines because they don't do your curves any favors and may add a few visual pounds. If you want to play it safe while impressing the audience with your incredible curves, avoid pockets and embellishments and stick to vertical lines and dark colors.

How To Dress An Hourglass With A Big Tummy-Helpful Guide

Skirts

Skirts should follow your natural figure and concentrate on your delicate waist without adding unnecessary volume at the bottom. If there is one type of skirt that always does justice to the hourglass body shape, this is the fabulous pencil skirt and the irresistible way it clings to the body and underlines the natural waist. You can never go wrong with an A-line skirt as long as it is shaped around the hips and made from structured fabric. If you prefer voluminous skirts, we won't keep you from them, but make sure they are high-waisted for maximum visual impact. All hemlines are acceptable, but if we were to choose we would often go with a knee-length or longer hemline for a more natural, fluid, and elegant look. Of course, you can wear mini skirts if you love to show your legs. However, if the situation requires a bit more covering, choose high-waisted skirts with a hemline right below the knee.

Jackets and Coats

And here we are, at the final layer! Hourglass body shapes look fabulous in a moto or belted jacket, but they can also pull off a cropped jacket if the hem lands near the hips and accentuates the bottom half. The key with jackets is to make sure they follow your natural body line and focus the attention on, you've guessed it, your waist. Single-breasted jackets are a great choice because they don't increase your breast size, as are longer, belted jackets that create the illusion of long legs and define your narrow waist. Coats should be form-fitted and tailored just like their little sisters, the jackets, but we want to make a point of keeping them simple without too many details or embellishments, so you can enjoy the balance we keep talking about. For an extra touch of genius and glamour, choose coats with epaulets to emphasize your shoulders.
